How to make a matcha face mask!
When it comes to making homemade skincare products, I like to use things we already have in the kitchen. I like using edible ingredients because I like treating my skin the same way I treat the rest of my body: by giving it good, healthy food. That, and sometimes I’m lazy, which usually just means raiding the kitchen. Especially when it’s 9 PM on a Sunday night, and I decide that I really want to make a face mask.
This kitchen raid involved our Matcha Green Tea Powder (we have this kind). Matcha is essentially a more concentrated green tea, and everyone knows about the health benefits of green tea. In fact, one glass of Matcha is equivalent to 10 glasses of regular green tea, which means an extremely high concentration of antioxidants. When ingested, Matcha has numerous health benefits. But it can also be used externally in skincare.
Antioxidant-packed Matcha helps to reduce skin redness and sun damage, as well as protect and rejuvenate skin. And while store-bought Matcha face masks can be expensive, it’s incredibly easy and affordable to make them at home. Our 10 oz Matcha bag was about $25, and you only use about 1/2 tsp of powder for each mask. If you’d like to learn how to make a Matcha green tea and coconut oil mask in your kitchen, here’s how I made mine.
- 1/2 tsp Matcha (We have this kind, but you can browse more here)
- 1/2 tsp coconut oil (You can also use another carrier oil like sweet almond, jojoba, apricot, or olive. I’ve read that raw honey also works well, but I haven’t tried it. We have this raw honey in our kitchen)
- Up to 1/2 tsp warm water
- Small bowl, measuring spoon, and something to stir with
- Optional: 1 drop peppermint essential oil
And here’s how I make a matcha face mask!
(Don’t use any ingredients you’re allergic to, and always spot test new ingredients to make sure you don’t have a reaction to them. Do not use any homemade products without consulting with an appropriate medical professional first.)
Step 1: First I dump 1/2 tsp Matcha, 1/2 tsp coconut oil, and 1 drop peppermint essential oil (optional) into my bowl.
Tip: You can run the mixture through the microwave for 10 seconds to melt the coconut oil. This isn’t necessary but makes mixing easier.
Step 2: I put a few drops of warm water into the bowl. Stir gently and add additional drops of water until the mixture is a paste. I want to be able to apply it using my fingertips, so I don’t want it to be too powdery or too runny.
Step 3: Next I apply to my face and neck. I let sit for 15–20 minutes. Then, I wash it off with warm water. Here’s yours truly. I never said it was a pretty product…but it does smell good, and it sure looks great afterward.
Tip: Not all Matcha masks use oil. I like adding the oil because it leaves my face feeling moisturized after I wash the mask off. It also gives the mask a creamy consistency—I think the mixture is too grainy when it’s just Matcha and water.
Since this is so easy to make, I only make one mask at a time to keep the mixture fresh. Don’t know what to do with the rest of your Matcha? Throw a teaspoon in a cut of hot water and drink it just as you would green tea. Enjoy.
