Materials Needed

  • 1/4 yard of cotton fabric (choose a print or solid color you like)
  • 1/4 inch wide elastic band, about 7 inches long
  • Matching sewing thread
  • Sewing machine or needle for hand sewing
  • Scissors
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Iron and ironing board (optional but recommended)

Skill Level

This project is suitable for beginners who have basic sewing skills such as straight stitching and using elastic. It’s a quick and rewarding project that can be completed in under an hour.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

Cut a fabric strip measuring 20 inches long and 3 inches wide. This size works well for most adult head sizes but can be adjusted if needed.

Step 2: Fold and Press

Fold the fabric strip lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. Pin or clip along the long edge. Press the fold with an iron to create a crisp edge for easier sewing.

Step 3: Sew the Long Edge

Sew along the pinned edge with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, creating a fabric tube. Leave the short ends open.

Step 4: Turn the Tube Right Side Out

Use a safety pin or turning tool to carefully turn the fabric tube right side out. Press the tube flat with an iron.

Step 5: Prepare the Elastic

Cut a piece of elastic about 7 inches long. This will provide a comfortable stretch to fit your head.

Step 6: Insert the Elastic

Thread the elastic through the fabric tube using a safety pin attached to one end of the elastic. Hold onto the other end of the elastic so it doesn’t get pulled inside.

Step 7: Sew the Ends Together

Overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1/2 inch and sew securely with a zigzag stitch. Then tuck the elastic ends inside the fabric tube.

Step 8: Close the Headband

Fold the raw edges of the fabric tube inward at each end and pin them together. Sew the ends closed with a straight stitch, making sure to catch both layers and the elastic inside.

Step 9: Final Touches

Give your headband a final press with the iron to smooth any wrinkles. Your simple fabric headband is now ready to wear!
