Materials Needed
- Two different cotton fabrics (1/2 yard each) for the outer and inner sides
- Coordinating thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Pins or clips
- Iron and ironing board
Skill Level
This project is suitable for beginners who have basic sewing skills such as straight stitching and using a sewing machine.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cut Your Fabric
Cut two rectangles from each fabric measuring 15 inches wide by 16 inches tall. These will form the front and back panels of your tote bag.
2. Prepare the Handles
From either fabric, cut two strips measuring 4 inches wide by 22 inches long for the handles. Fold each strip in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew along the long edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn the tubes right side out and press flat.
3. Assemble the Outer and Inner Bags
Place the two outer fabric rectangles right sides together. Pin and sew along the sides and bottom edges with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Repeat this step with the inner fabric rectangles.
4. Create Boxed Corners
To give your tote bag depth, pinch each bottom corner of both the outer and inner bags so the side seam and bottom seam align, forming a triangle. Measure 2 inches from the tip of the triangle and sew straight across. Trim excess fabric.
5. Attach the Handles
Turn the outer bag right side out. Pin the handles to the top edge of the outer bag, spacing them evenly about 4 inches from each side seam. The raw edges of the handles should align with the top edge of the bag. Baste the handles in place.
6. Join Outer and Inner Bags
Place the outer bag (with handles attached) inside the inner bag, so right sides are facing each other and handles are tucked between the layers. Align the top edges and pin all around.
7. Sew the Top Edge
Sew around the top edge with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving a 3-inch opening to turn the bag right side out.
8. Turn and Press
Pull the bag through the opening to turn it right side out. Push the inner bag inside the outer bag and press the top edge flat, folding in the seam allowance at the opening.
9. Topstitch the Bag
Topstitch around the entire top edge of the bag, closing the opening and securing the handles firmly.
Final Tips
- Use contrasting fabrics for a fun reversible effect.
- Press seams carefully for a polished finish.
