Materials Needed
- Black, orange, and white cardstock paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- Craft knife (optional, for detailed cutting)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Battery-operated tealight candles
- Hole punch
- String or thin ribbon (optional, for hanging)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Lantern Base
Start by cutting a rectangular piece of orange cardstock measuring approximately 20cm by 15cm. This will form the main body of your lantern.
Step 2: Mark and Cut Slits
Using a ruler and pencil, draw parallel lines lengthwise on the orange cardstock, about 1.5cm apart, stopping 2cm from each edge. Carefully cut along these lines with scissors or a craft knife to create slits. These slits will allow light to shine through.
Step 3: Form the Lantern Shape
Roll the orange cardstock into a cylinder shape, overlapping the short edges by about 2cm. Secure the edges with glue or double-sided tape.
Step 4: Create the Lantern Ends
Cut two circles from black cardstock, each about 7cm in diameter. These will be the top and bottom of your lantern. Attach one circle to the bottom of the cylinder with glue.
Step 5: Add Halloween Faces
Cut out simple spooky faces (eyes, nose, mouth) from black cardstock or draw them on white cardstock and glue them onto the orange lantern. Position them between the slits for a glowing effect.
Step 6: Attach the Top and Handle
Glue the second black circle to the top of the lantern. Use a hole punch to make two holes opposite each other on the top circle. Thread string or ribbon through the holes to create a handle for hanging.
Step 7: Light Your Lantern
Place a battery-operated tealight candle inside your lantern. Avoid using real candles for safety.
